Looking to make a business case for a workplace action plan to foster better mental wellbeing? Here are 10 good reasons to support employee mental health.

Businesses that invest in mental health initiatives in their workplace not only show support for the wellbeing of their employees, they also experience benefits to their bottom line. Initiatives such as counselling services, implementing mental health policies and procedures, raising awareness of mental health to reduce stigma, supporting flexible working arrangements and improving workplace culture are all measures that can translate into real business rewards.

Benefits of supporting mental health in the workplace

A recent report on mental health in the workplace by PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) shows an annual cost of almost $10.9 billion to Australian businesses due to associated employee absenteeism, compensation claims and reduced productivity while at work.

The report also outlines the benefits of implementing an action plan for mental health in the workplace. These benefits include:

1. Shorter periods of sick leave.
2. Less sick leave related to alcohol or substance abuse.
3. Employees less likely to take leave on a recurring basis.
4. An increase in the number of hours worked.
5. Improved ability to recover from periods of illness.
6. An increase in achieving workplace goals.
7. A reduction in the intention to retire.
8. A reduction in the number of days worked under the influence of alcohol or other substances.
9. Minimising loss of productivity when intervening early.
10. A reduction in the social isolation that people experiencing depression may feel.
