Heads Up one year on: encouraging progress on workplace mental health

This month marks 12 months since Heads Up was launched to help individuals and businesses across Australia create mentally healthy workplaces, with new research illustrating improved awareness and attitudes among business leaders.

We've been delighted with the response, and the clear commitment from people at all levels - leaders, small business owners, managers, and employees. More than 250,000 of you have visited the Heads Up website for information, tips and guidance as you take the first steps to better workplace mental health. 

A breakfast of 700 business leaders at Melbourne’s Town Hall marked the anniversary, the largest and last of 18 business breakfasts held around the country promoting mentally healthy workplaces.

The event created an opportunity for business leaders from diverse industries to hear about Heads Up and great momentum was generated with many leaders going straight back to their organisations and registering for Heads Up.

New report highlights heightened awareness

We know Heads Up is making a difference. A new report from social research agency TNS evaluated the impact of Heads Up and found a significant improvement in attitudes towards mental health in more than 300 senior leaders and other managers of Australian businesses. 

Three-quarters of leaders surveyed now believe good mental health should be a focus in workplaces. The number who said they had information and materials about mental health at work rose to almost two-thirds, an increase of 30 per cent since the launch of Heads Up. More than half (54 per cent) said their workplace ran mental health awareness training, while 63 per cent of companies provided employees with information about mental health - both up 29 per cent.

Taking action for better workplace mental health

Thanks to Heads Up, businesses across the country are making huge strides. Jetstar Australia and New Zealand CEO David Hall said Jetstar had implemented a mental health action plan across the organisation.

“Our involvement in the Heads Up initiative has helped put mental health at the forefront of our wellbeing program,” he said.

“We’re working hard to reduce the stigma around mental health by encouraging our teams to open up the lines of communication across the workforce. We have a long way to go yet, but I know we’re on the right track with the guidance of Beyond Blue.”
